5.3 Sedimentary rocks

Vocabulary

sediment-small solid pieces of materials that come from living things or rocks
deposition-the process by which sediment settle out of the water or wind carrying it
compaction-the process that presses sediments together into layers
cementation-the process in which dissolved minerals crystallize and glue particles toghether
organic rock-rock in which plants and animals are deposited in thick layers

Outline

Sedimentary Rocks
  • From sediment to rock
    • Erosion
      • Many forces break up rock into small fragments
    • Deposition
      • Sometimes sediments mays pile up
      • This forms sedimentary rock
    • Compaction
      • After time, sediments may pile up
      • This presses it into sedidimentary rock
    • Cementation
      • sediment slowly dissolve in water
      • The particles seep into other sediments
      • this slowly glue and crystalize sediments together
  • Types of Sedimentary rock
    • Clastic rocks
      • Shale
      • Sandstone
      • Conglomerate
      • Breccia
    • Organic rocks
      • Limestone
      • Coal
    • Chemical rocks
      • Rock that dissolve and then crystalize
  • Uses of sedimentary rock
      • Smelting iron ore(limstone).
      • The White house is made of sandstone
